This church is part of the Thrissur Archdiocese of Syro Malabar Rite of the Roman Catholic Church. It is situated at the Head Quarters of Thrissur at Ayyanthole. This is about 3.5 km away from Thrissur Swaraj Round which is the centre part of Thrissur City and 3 km away from Thrissur Railway Station, KSRTC Bus Stand and very close to Civil Station.

This Parish comes under the Dolours Basilica Forane and consists of 551 families and the total number of faithful exceeds 2000 persons. For administrative purpose, the families have been divided into 15 units. The church is having it’s own shopping complex and two Parish Halls for religious activities attached with ample parking place.

This church is dedicated to Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus. Church teaches that Holy Mary was assumed into heaven with her body and soul. Hence it is called St. Mary’s Assumption Church. The festival dedicated to Holy Mother Mary is celebrated on 15th August every year. It coincides with the Independence Day of India. The main festival includes High Holy Mass followed by a huge procession of believers and thereafter lunch for all the people of the locality irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
People of Thrissur Diocese are renowned for their devotion to St. Sebastian. This saint is venerated as the saint who eliminates the evil spirits that spread communicable diseases such as small pox etc. The symbolic arrow used for terminating evil spirits is taken out in procession to all houses for veneration. Because of the age old traditional belief, the feast of St. Sebastian is held in a most pompous manner during the last week of January. The special devotion to St. Sebastian is a peculiarity of Thrissur Diocese. This festival is also peculiar in nature as all family relatives gather together every year and foster greater family relationship.

There are other festivals conducted by the church including the feast of Saint Raphael or Malahayude Perunnal held on last Sunday of October in North Kappela of the church. This church has a history of 150 years and is in the threshold of building a new church befitting to District Headquarters.
